A laptop that won't turn on feels like the end, but it rarely is. The cause is usually one of a short list: a dead battery, a failed charger, a worn charging port, a stuck power state, a failed drive, or a software fault. Each one can be tested in turn without risking your data.

Before you assume the worst, try the quick checks below. If the laptop still won't come back, message us: we diagnose it for free, tell you what's wrong, and if the machine isn't worth repairing we recover your files first.

What we handle

Why a Laptop Won't Turn On

The most common causes we find, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the answer.

Dead battery or failed charger

Try a known-good charger and check the charger's light. Adapters fail far more often than motherboards do.

Worn charging port

If it only charges when the cable is wiggled or held at an angle, the port has worn out. It's common, and on many laptops the port is a separate part we can replace.

Stuck power state

Unplug everything, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then try again. Clears many 'dead' laptops with no repair needed.

Power light on, but the screen stays black

The power or keyboard light comes on and fans may spin, but nothing appears. Usually memory, the display or its cable, or a stuck BIOS state, not a dead laptop. Do the 30-second reset, then try an external monitor.

Stuck on logo / boot loop

Failed Windows update, corrupt system files or a failing drive. Usually fixable, and your files are typically still intact.

Liquid damage or drop

Turn it off and unplug it immediately, and don't try to power it on. The sooner it's opened, the better the outcome.

Common questions

Laptop Won't Turn On FAQs

Are my files gone if my laptop won't turn on?

Usually not. In most cases the drive is healthy and the fault is elsewhere. We can remove the drive and recover your files even when the laptop itself isn't worth repairing.

My laptop won't turn on but the power light is on. What's wrong?

That points to the display, its cable, memory or graphics, or a stuck BIOS state, rather than a completely dead machine. Unplug it, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then try again. If it still shows nothing, plug in an external monitor: if that shows a picture, the laptop is fine and it's the screen or cable.

My HP, Dell, Lenovo or ASUS laptop won't turn on but the power light is on. Is it brand-specific?

The fault looks the same on every brand, but the checks differ. Dell laptops flash a pattern on the power or battery light that points to the failed part. Many HP laptops have a BIOS recovery that can be triggered from the keyboard. Many Lenovo laptops have a pinhole emergency reset on the underside. Acer and ASUS laptops are usually a memory, display or power-state fault. We run the right checks for your model during the free diagnosis.

How much does it cost to diagnose a laptop that won't turn on?

Diagnosis is free. You only pay if you approve a repair, and on software faults, if we can't fix it you don't pay.

Should I try charging it overnight?

A few hours on a known-good charger is fine. If there's no charging light at all, or the laptop got hot or smelled burnt, stop and message us rather than leaving it plugged in.

Can you come to me or do I need to bring it in?

Free pickup and return anywhere in Ottawa, or drop it at our workshop by appointment. Many software faults can also be started remotely.
