Common Wi-Fi Problems We Fix
Pick the one that sounds like yours for what causes it, what to try first, and how we fix it.
Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting
Drops every few minutes, on one laptop or iPhone, or on every device at once.
Slow Wi-Fi
Paying for fast internet but getting slow Wi-Fi, in one room or everywhere.
Wi-Fi not working or no internet
Connected but no internet, router lights red, or a Rogers or Bell outage?
Weak signal and dead zones
Basements, upstairs bedrooms, garages and backyards with mesh or extenders.
Whole-network problems
Printers and shared files nobody can reach, and small office networks.
How We Fix Home Wi-Fi
We diagnose before we recommend anything. You should never be sold a mesh system for a problem that a channel change would have fixed.
Step 1: We map your signal
Measure coverage in the rooms you actually use, and check what's competing with you.
Step 2: We find the cause
Placement, congestion, old hardware, firmware, or one device causing trouble. We confirm it rather than guess.
Step 3: You get the options
What would fix it, what it costs, and what you can skip. Hardware you buy yourself.
Step 4: We set it up and test
Configured, secured, and every device in the house reconnected before we leave.
Home Wi-Fi FAQs
How much does Wi-Fi setup cost in Ottawa?
Home Wi-Fi setup and troubleshooting starts at $40. Diagnosis is free and you get the price up front. Hardware like a mesh system or a new router is separate. We'll recommend what suits your home and you buy it yourself, so there's no markup from us.
Why does my Wi-Fi keep dropping out?
Usually one of a handful of causes: the router is in a poor spot (a basement corner or a cabinet), too many devices on an older router, interference from neighbouring networks on a crowded channel, aging firmware, or a device that keeps switching between bands. We measure signal in the rooms where it actually matters rather than guessing, then fix the cause.
Do you offer same-day Wi-Fi installation?
Often, when we have an opening. Home Wi-Fi setup and router or mesh installation are booked seven days a week from 7 AM to 11 PM, usually same-day or next-day across Ottawa. Message us with your provider and what you need set up.
How do I change my Wi-Fi password?
Use your provider's app (Bell, Rogers and Virgin each have one) or sign in to the router's settings page in a browser, often at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.2.1 on Bell Home Hubs. Change the Wi-Fi password there, then reconnect every device with the new one. If you'd rather not, we'll do it and reconnect everything for you.
How do I reset my router, and should I?
Restarting (unplugging it for 30 seconds) is safe and fixes a lot. A factory reset, using the pinhole button held for about 10 seconds, wipes all its settings, including your Wi-Fi name and password, so every device will need setting up again. Try a restart first, and only factory reset if you're ready to set it up from scratch.
What's the difference between a modem and a router?
The modem brings the internet into your home from your provider's line. The router creates your Wi-Fi network and shares that connection with your devices. Most Bell and Rogers boxes do both, and a mesh system or your own router can take over the Wi-Fi part.
Is it my router or my computer?
If phones and newer devices in the same room are fast and one computer is slow, the computer's Wi-Fi card is usually the bottleneck, not the router. A newer Wi-Fi card or adapter fixes that for far less than a new router or computer.
Wi-Fi card upgradesHow do I fix slow internet at home?
First find out whether it's the internet or the Wi-Fi: run a speed test on a computer plugged into the router with a cable. If that's slow too, restart the modem and call your provider. If the wired speed is fine but Wi-Fi is slow, the problem is inside your home: router placement, interference, an old router, or too many devices on one band. That's the part we fix.
How can I improve my Wi-Fi signal?
Move the router out of cabinets, basements and corners into a central, open spot, ideally up high. Keep it away from microwaves and thick walls, restart it, and update its firmware. If one room is still weak after that, an extender can help; if several rooms or floors are weak, a mesh system is the proper fix.
Why is the Wi-Fi not working on my TV or phone but working on other devices?
When everything else connects fine, the problem is almost always that one device, not the internet. Common causes are a saved network with an old password, a TV or phone stuck on a band or Wi-Fi setting the router no longer offers after a router swap, outdated TV firmware, or a router feature that newer devices handle and older ones don't. Forget the network on the device and reconnect first. If that doesn't fix it, we find the setting that's blocking it, remotely or on a visit.
Wi-Fi stopped working on my Windows 11 laptop. Can you fix it?
Usually, yes. After a Windows 11 update the most common culprits are a Wi-Fi driver that was replaced or broken, power-saving settings that switch the adapter off, or a network profile that needs to be reset. If other devices connect fine, it's the laptop, and it's typically a software fix we can often do remotely if you can get online with a cable or phone hotspot.
Do I need a mesh system or will an extender do?
It depends on your home, not on what's on sale. Extenders are cheap but halve throughput and often make devices cling to a weak signal. A mesh system is the better answer for a multi-floor house or anywhere the dead zone is more than a room away from the router. We'll tell you which one your place needs. Sometimes the answer is just moving the router you already have.
Can you fix Wi-Fi dead zones in a basement or upstairs bedroom?
Yes, this is one of our most common calls. We check where the signal actually falls off, then fix it with router placement, a correctly configured mesh node, a channel change, or a wired backhaul where the layout allows it.
Can you set up my new router after switching to Bell or Rogers?
Yes. We set up the new router or modem, name your network, set a strong password, create a guest network, and reconnect everything you own: laptops, phones, printers, smart TVs, thermostats, cameras and game consoles. Nothing is left offline after the switch.
Is my home Wi-Fi secure?
Often less than people assume. Many routers are still running the default admin password printed on the sticker, outdated WPA settings, or firmware that hasn't been updated in years. We change the admin credentials, enable current encryption, update firmware, and put guests and smart devices on a separate network away from your computers.
