Microphone or Webcam Not Working? Let's Fix It Before Your Call

No one can hear you in Teams, your camera shows a black screen in Zoom, or your headset mic stopped working after an update. Most of these are settings, and most are fixed remotely in under an hour.

Remote from $25 · Often same-hour · Windows and Mac

When the microphone or camera stops working, the hardware is rarely broken. Far more often a Windows or macOS privacy setting is blocking the app, the call app is using the wrong device, another program has grabbed the camera, or an update replaced a driver.

We connect remotely, find which of those it is, fix it, and test it with you in a real call, so you're not finding out at the start of the meeting.

What we handle

Common Causes We Fix

Privacy settings blocking the app

Windows 11 and macOS let you block microphone and camera access per app. Teams, Zoom or your browser can end up switched off after an update.

Wrong device selected

The call app is listening to a disconnected headset, a webcam mic, or a monitor's speakers instead of the device you're using.

Camera in use or switched off

Another app holds the camera, a privacy shutter is closed, or the laptop's camera key has turned it off.

Bluetooth headset and AirPods problems

Bluetooth headsets switch to a low-quality mode when the mic is on, or connect to your phone instead of the laptop.

Driver or update problems

An audio or camera driver replaced by Windows Update. We install the right one from your laptop maker.

USB webcam or headset not detected

Port, hub, power or driver problems with external webcams and headsets like Logitech and Jabra.

Quick Checks for Windows 11 and Mac

On Windows 11, open Settings, Privacy & security, then Microphone (or Camera), and make sure access is on for the device, for apps, and for desktop apps. Then check Settings, System, Sound, Input to see which microphone Windows is using, and pick the same one inside Teams or Zoom under their audio and video settings.

On a Mac, open System Settings, Privacy & Security, then Microphone or Camera, and turn on access for Zoom, Teams or your browser; the app usually needs to be quit and reopened afterwards. If the camera still shows black, quit every other app that might be using it, then restart.

Common questions

Microphone & Webcam FAQs

Why is my microphone not working in Teams on Windows 11?

Usually Windows privacy settings are blocking desktop apps from the microphone, or Teams is set to a different device. Check Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, then choose the right mic in Teams' device settings.

Why does my webcam show a black screen?

Another app may be using it, a privacy shutter may be closed, or the camera is turned off by a keyboard key or a privacy setting. Close other apps, check the shutter and the camera privacy setting, then restart.

Why do my AirPods or Bluetooth headset sound bad when the mic is on?

Bluetooth switches to a hands-free mode with lower audio quality whenever the microphone is in use. A USB headset or using the laptop's built-in mic with the Bluetooth headset for listening often sounds much better.

Can you fix it before my meeting starts?

Often, yes. Message us on WhatsApp with the app and device. Remote fixes are usually quick, and we reply within minutes between 7 AM and 11 PM.

My webcam or mic isn't working in an online exam app. Can you help?

Yes. We install or update the exam software your course uses (such as LockDown Browser) and check your webcam and microphone work with it before the exam. We don't help bypass exam software in any way.

Do I need a new webcam or microphone?

Rarely. Most cases are settings or drivers. If the hardware has failed, we'll recommend an inexpensive replacement that works with your setup.
